Since 1990, Theo Jansen has been involved making new types of life… not through some science fiction marvel, but rather with his own two hands. He utilizes old plastic tubes and lemonade containers to sort out behemoth skeletons that stroll ashore under the force of the wind.
The task, entitled STRANDBEEST, is really hypnotizing to observe. Janson considers his manifestations alive in their own privilege, and needs to give them a chance to meander aimlessly wherever the wind will take them.
In Jansen's words, "After some time, these skeletons have turned out to be better at surviving the components, for example, tempests and water… Eventually I need to put these creatures out in crowds on the shorelines, so they will experience their own lives."
Look at the staggering footage in the video underneath! I needed to watch it twice.
